Council meetings in Whitecourt don’t often see companies appear to request penalties waived on missed tax payments.

That happened twice Tuesday. Two companies (Midstream Silica, 1915647 Alberta Ltd) that both cited missed taxed notices after changing addresses owed the town about $12,000 each and both requests to waive the fees were denied.

Mayor Maryann Chichak on the unusual requests.

Chichak doesn’t know if there would ever be a reason for council to waive the penalties.

The decision to move forward with the penalties wasn’t unanimous, with councilors Darlene Chartrand and Eris Moncur opposed.
