After a nine year absence, thoroughbred horse racing will make its return to the Calgary area for the 2018 season at Century Downs Racetrack and Casino.
The Alberta government signed a new 10 year agreement with Horse Racing Alberta last year.
The return of horse racing to the province will support over 1,600 new jobs and contribute millions of dollars of investment in infrastructure. It will also support the agriculture industry and rural communities.
Infrastructure will include a new track expanding to the Edmonton area as well in the future.
Horse racing generates an estimated $290 million in economic benefits for Alberta. Per the agreement, the government will provide $35 million to Horse Racing Alberta for the 2017-2018 season, of which no tax dollars will be included.
