Homeowners in Alberta Beach awoke to cracking sounds and damage to their homes after two minor seismic events in the small village this week.

The quakes, both a magnitude 2, happened around 11:45 Monday night.

Officials at the Alberta Energy Regulator believe they were naturally caused by groundwater freezing and suddenly cracking, shaking the ground.

In addition to damaging nearby structures, the ice quakes caused large cracks to open up in the ground around Lac St. Anne.
