Kids in communities of Canada’s North will have decent hockey and skating equipment to use thanks to the Skate North program.
Now in its 14th year, the program gets used equipment donated from local thrift stores in Whitecourt and Lac Ste. Anne County, and then takes it north to Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut for those unable to afford it.
Onoway resident Bob Walker started Skate North in February 2005 after a fishing trip in the Northwest Territories.
Walker says the program is made special each year by the continued community support and involvement.
Walker says all the items will be collected February 10, taken to Edmonton, and then flown up north to the communities receiving the donations.
