14 Athletes Headed to Wood Buffalo For AWG

14 local athletes are headed to the Alberta Winter Games in Wood Buffalo this week.

Zoe Vannes and Avery Debruyne from Yellowhead County along with Noah Swanson from Drayton Valley will compete in the wrestling category.

Barrhead’s Emily Hiemstra and Parkland County’s Riese Sheldon-Houle are playing Zone 5 Volleyball.

Evan Sawchuk of Parkland County will look for hardware in Badminton.  Two girls, Jacinda Rolph from Parkland County and Cassie Jorgenon from Drayton Valley, will try to help Zone 5 win a Ringette medal.

Parkland County’s Jorja McDermid and Kathryn Oakey-Ayroud of Drayton Valley are competing in skiing events.  Henrik and Antija Quintilio, both from Barrhead, are competing in the boys and girls biathlon.

The Zone 6 female hockey team headed to the Alberta Winter Games will have a large local contingent.

A forward, Katie Charko from Whitecourt will be competing in Wood Buffalo when the Games get underway next week.  Fox Creek’s Grace Lutz will also be on the roster. Lutz will be one of two to dawn the pads in net for Zone 6.

Barrhead’s Ashley Shrode will be the team’s head coach. Whitecourt’s Kait Moffat is the Director of Operations.

Murray Summers of Whitecourt is a mentor on the Zone 5 team.
