The Alberta Backcountry Hunters are applauding a decision by the Alberta Government to not end trout fishing in a number of streams and rivers around the province.
The government announced last month that trout fishing will be able to continue in the Ram, Clearwater, Little Smoky, McLeod, Kakwa, and North Saskatchewan waterways.
The Environment Ministry says it’s possible that a prohibition is enacted upon in the future.
The Alberta Backcountry Hunters’ angling chair, Jordan Pinkster, wants to see all the details.
Pinkster says habitat fragmentation and degradation are the leading causes of disruption to the trout ecosystem.
The government does plan to increase funding for groups to help rebuild waterways.
