Jasper RCMP have released details about the deadly multi-vehicle collision that occurred last night on Highway 93 south of Jasper, killing six people.
RCMP were called to the scene at Honeymoon Lake, five kilometres south of Sunwapta Falls and 60 kilometres south of Jasper around 5:00 pm.
A northbound van collided head-on with a southbound vehicle resulting in both catching fire. In an effort to avoid the collision, a third vehicle went off the roadway.
The van was carrying five occupants of a family visiting from the United States. Two of the van’s occupants died on scene while two others were transported to Edmonton hospitals in very serious condition. The fifth occupant was a toddler who was taken to the Jasper healthcare centre but suffered no injuries.
The second vehicle was carrying four people and all four died on scene. The vehicle that went off the road had two occupants who suffered only minor injuries.
The highway was closed in both directions for the night and traffic was rerouted before the roadway reopened around 4:30 this morning.
Two collision analysts were called to the scene and continue to investigate the cause along with RCMP.
