A weekend crash on Highway 22 in Drayton Valley sent a 6-year-old child to hospital with serious injuries.
On Saturday, November 3rd, Drayton Valley RCMP and Emergency Services responded to a head-on collision between a pickup truck and a flat deck semi truck.
The pick up was traveling eastbound when it hit black ice on the bridge, sliding into the guardrail and into the oncoming lane, into the path of a westbound semi. All of the occupants were able to escape the vehicles before the pick up caught fire.
A 6-year-old female passenger in the pickup truck was airlifted by STARS Air Ambulance to Alberta Children’s Hospital in Edmonton in serious condition, and the female driver of the pickup truck was transported to the Drayton Valley Hospital by ground ambulance.
The male driver of the semi was not injured.
Highway 22 was closed for a short period of time while emergency crews investigated the scene. Poor road conditions is believed to be the primary cause for the collision.
