A recent report released from the Macleans Magazine shows that Whitecourt is the 8th most dangerous place to be in Canada. The report shows that over the last 5 years, Whitecourt’s Crime Severity Index rose 172 points. The Violent Crime Severity Index rose 138 points.
The assault rate decreased, but is still sitting higher than the Canadian average at about 991 per 100 000 people. The Canadian average is about 430 per 100 000 people.
Despite those numbers, Mayor Maryann Chichak explains that the numbers are not an accurate representation when compared to our population.
Chichak went on to say that, “Any statistics that we see in the community are a result of our RCMP members doing their job.” Back in 2016, Whitecourt’s population was set at 10 204 residents.
