Whitecourt Town Council this week discussed a topic that was brought back to the table for debate at the Policies and Priorities Meeting.
Council discussed the idea of imposing a $10 fee on volunteer criminal record checks, which was first brought to their attention in the summer.
Mayor Maryann Chichak with more on the topic.
Chichak says the Whitecourt RCMP detachment processes approximately 1,500 volunteer criminal record check applications each year, which takes up to 880 hours of time and resources. Councilors discussed the fact that some organizations can do without the criminal record check requirements to free up the number of applications being processed.
When looking at other municipalities, the Mayor says it’s about 50/50 for those who do charge a fee and those who don’t.
Council decided, for now, to leave things the way they are for 6 months, and then will bring the topic back to the table in June of 2019.
