Swan Hills RCMP are advising residents of a remote computer access fraud scam that has surfaced in the area.
RCMP have received two reports of fraudsters contacting potential victims by phone and attempting to fraudulently obtain funds.
In one report, a victim was contacted by a suspect posing as someone from a reputable business and asking for remote access to the person’s computer. Once granted, the suspect was able to access banking information and defrauded the victim of thousands of dollars.
Another report found a suspect contacted a potential victim by phone posing as a computer security representative to gain access to the person’s computer. The fraudster, however, was not successful once the person on the line grew suspicious and canceled the phone call.
RCMP are reminding people to be aware and to never grant remote access to a device over the phone unless the person on the line is trusted or has verified their identity.
Police ask that if you suspect you are a victim of fraud to report it.
