Whitecourt RCMP and the Whitecourt Integrated Traffic Unit arrested a man on Tuesday, May 28th after pursuing a stolen vehicle.
Whitecourt RCMP were notified of a stolen vehicle approaching the area. The vehicle had been carjacked earlier in the day, leading to a pursuit with RCMP from the Valleyview and Fox Creek Detachments.
The suspect vehicle was driving erratically nearly causing collisions on the highway. A number of motorists reported concerns to police of a vehicle driving dangerously.
RCMP then tried to stop the vehicle as it approached Whitecourt by deploying a spike belt. The suspect vehicle continued driving on the rims of its tires before the driver of a tractor-trailer unit then forced the vehicle into the ditch, ending the pursuit and concern for public safety on the highway.
28-year-old Tyler Daniel Burns of Edmonton was arrested and charged with flight from police, dangerous driving, possession of stolen property over $5000, impaired operation of a motor vehicle by drug, and fail to comply with recognizance.
Burns remains in custody pending a bail hearing in St. Albert Provincial Court on June 3rd.
