The Town of Whitecourt is looking ahead to a possible future that is financially separate from Woodlands County.

Discussions between the two about making a new inter-municipal cost-sharing agreement are still ongoing, but without the certainty of what may happen with that agreement, the Town must start looking at planning ahead outside of the County.

Mayor Maryann Chichak says the Town is planning to look at next year’s budget as if they were on their own.

The current cost-sharing agreement between Whitecourt and Woodlands expires December 31st, 2019, and the two parties continue to negotiate a possible new contract.

Chichak says should the Town and County not be able to come to a new agreement, Whitecourt needs to look at their own finances and decide how to move forward from a budgeting perspective and how to proceed with their own services without County contribution.
