Crowds of people will be flocking into Whitecourt this weekend to watch some boat racing on the Athabasca.
The 2019 World Jet Boat Championship opens in Whitecourt, running today and tomorrow at River Boat Park.
The championship features over 60 boats and racers from all over the world and goes until July 21, starting in Whitecourt and wrapping up in Taylor, BC. The only other countries that host the World Jet Boat Championships are the United States, Mexico, and New Zealand.
World Jet Boat Championship Communications Coordinator Penny Batt says holding races in small towns is a staple of the event.
Time Trials begin today from 1 until 10 pm, and there will be a boat show and shine happening from 3-7.
Tomorrow races start at 9 am and run all day. The entry fee is $5.00 a person.
