As the year-end deadline gets closer to the expiration of the Intermunicipal Cost-Sharing Agreement between Whitecourt and Woodlands County, the two parties have stopped their negotiation meetings.

Representatives from both sides had been meeting since March trying to come up with a new agreement before the December 31st expiry, but according to Whitecourt Mayor Maryann Chichak, meetings were deferred on May 17th.

Chichak gave the update this week after saying Town Council has been getting questions from the public regarding the progress of the meetings.

Chichak says it’s an unfortunate turn of events. At this point in time, she says there is no date set to resume the meetings or if they will at all. She added the Town is willing to come back to the table but Woodlands has to adhere to the protocols that were set in place and be willing to negotiate respectfully.
