Starting later this Fall, those who use the Whitecourt airport will be charged user fees, in an effort to ensure operations are financially sustainable for Woodlands County moving forward.
County Council this week discussed a Request for Decision (RFD) regarding airport user fees that was presented at the Airport Advisory Committee meeting on September 12th. The RFD suggests user fees be implemented for landing, aircraft parking, and vehicle parking as well as terminal fees, and miscellaneous airport fees.
Administration says they conducted surveys of user fees at similarly-sized airports that included Edson, Slave Lake, Lethbridge, and Dawson Creek to establish Whitecourt’s fee breakdown.
Implementing user fees would help offset operational costs at the airport by approximately $50,000 to $80,000 a year, which fits into Woodlands’ plans to save money over the next five years. The A.C.C did recommend, however, that helicopters based at the Whitecourt airport be exempt from the user fees.
Council passed the motion at Tuesday’s meeting as presented, which will add the user fees but exempt helicopters based in Whitecourt.
The user fees will be effective as of November 1st, 2019.
