A few Whitecourt schools had some one on one time with the province’s education minister yesterday when she stopped in town on her school tour, ahead of the provincial budget being released in two weeks.
Minister Adriana LaGrange toured Percy Baxter School, Ecole St. Mary’s School, and Hilltop High School, speaking with students and staff in various classrooms and programs.
Minister LaGrange says getting a chance to speak one on one with students gives her a better understanding of what is needed in schools.
The Minister’s tour has taken to her about 65% of the schools and school boards in the province so far, including public, private, separate, charter, and First Nations schools. She says the tour is allowing her to see how schools are functioning, and how students are learning so she can make her decisions come budget time. LaGrange pointed out that there are 720,000 students in Alberta from kindergarten to grade 12, so it’s important for her to know what’s going on so she can make positive decisions for education.
LaGrange said she was impressed so far with the amount of technology being used in classrooms, and with the professionalism of the teachers she’s met.
Following the school tours, the Minister sat down for meetings with school board trustees and officials.
