Woodlands County Council had visits this week from the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) and the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER).
CAPP talked about the state of the oil and gas sector right now, and the AER highlighted the problem of orphan wells and uncollected taxes for municipalities.
The AER said they have identified shortcomings in the process and are working to solve them.
Woodlands County Mayor John Burrows says the presentations were “a dose of reality” to hear and believes the public needs to be aware of the full situation. Council directed Administration to try and set up a possible public meeting.
The CAPP presentation said there were about 1100 inactive wells on land in the County right now. Burrows hopes if people have answers it can help ease some stress for landowners.
