The Town of Whitecourt will soon have its town boundary extended to the Athabasca River.

Town Council last week discussed an update on a project that will see three sections of land between the Athabasca River and Flats Road be annexed from Woodlands County to the Town.

The project is one the Town and County have worked on for years, and recently the sections of land were approved for annexation by the Municipal Government Board. The land includes the Whitecourt Golf and Country Club and Graham Acres.

Mayor Maryann Chichak says residents won’t see any significant changes yet for awhile.

Over the next several months the Town will work to make an Area Structure Plan and make changes to the Land Use Bylaw for a Municipal Development Plan, with the goal of eventually having future development in the area.
