The Town of Whitecourt received an update this week on FireSmart activities in the community in a report delivered by Fire Chief Brian Wynn and Alberta Forestry.
Through major funding provided in grants from FireSmart Canada and the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIIA), 474 hectares have been completed in and around Whitecourt, and another 120 hectares retreated.
Whitecourt has been a FireSmart Community since 2010, with active engagement in mitigation practices since 2014.
Mayor Maryann Chichak says the community support has been amazing.
Council has given support for an Expression of Interest (EOI) application to FRIIA requesting financial support to assist in hosting a tabletop exercise. The exercise would be joint collaboration with the Town, Woodlands County, emergency services, and other partners in the future as a way to test the Emergency Management System to ensure everything is ready in case of a real-life emergency.
