A well-known Whitecourt resident was surprised this week to find out she was recognized for her volunteerism.

Rand Richards got the news that she was nominated for and has won a Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers.

The medal recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians in a wide range of fields and pays tribute to their dedication and commitment.

Rand says upon hearing the news, she at first didn’t believe it.

Rand is an active member of the Cancer and Wellness group in Whitecourt, an organization that she says she’s very passionate about. She also helps out with Whitecourt Minor Hockey and Minor Ball, on school council, and with various local political campaigns.

While Rand has won the medal, she doesn’t know yet when she will receive it, as an announcement and location will be made at a later date.
