With in-school classes canceled indefinitely during the Coronavirus pandemic, the Alberta government has decided to temporarily adjust and redirect education costs to resources needed to fight the COVID-19 crisis.
K-12 education funding will be adjusted to reflect the cost of at-home learning by students.
The government says funding for teachers and most other aspects will be maintained, but funding for transportation and some services not being used in an at-home environment, such as substitute teachers and educational assistants, is being temporarily reduced.
The province says the funding will be restored when in-person classes resume. Any savings from these adjustments will be allocated to support Alberta’s Covid-19 response.
Any staff impacted by the funding adjustments will qualify for the federal government’s enhanced employment insurance program and other support programs for Canadian workers.
