Grande Yellowhead Public School Division says it will be keeping non-essential staff until the end of April after the province announced funding reductions last week.

Education Minister Adriana LaGrange announced on Saturday that in order to support the province’s response to COVID-19, a portion of education funding will be temporarily redirected.

This will see a 14% reduction in K-12 funding to all school jurisdictions across the province for May and June.

School jurisdictions have been given some flexibility to adjust to the reduced funding based on the unique learning contexts of their student populations.

At their public board meeting on Wednesday, GYPSD Trustees voted to keep non-essential staff on to the end of the month, while senior team members will be working with school and central leaders to make difficult decisions about the remainder of the school year.

The province has said the funding reductions are temporary and reflect the shift to distance and online learning environments.
