A bridge collapse in Lac Ste. Anne County yesterday resulted in hazardous materials spilling into the Little Paddle River near Mayerthorpe.

The bridge on Range Road 81, north of Township Road 574 just east of Mayerthorpe, collapsed according to an Alberta Emergency Alert that was sent out just after 1:30 pm.

A piece of agriculture machinery was crossing the bridge and ended up in the river below, resulting in fuel leaking into the water.

Range Road 81 was closed while crews worked to contain the spill and remove the machinery.

The road remains closed to all but local traffic from Township Road 574 to Township Road 580 until further notice.

Landowners downstream from the bridge are asked not to use the river water for livestock or other purposes until clean-up is completed.
