The Scott Safety Centre will have its ice cleaned next season by a new Zamboni after Whitecourt Town Council this week decided to go ahead with the purchase of a new machine.
Zamboni models are usually switched out every five years, as that is the average timeframe for their use.
Mayor Maryann Chichak says they don’t always need replacing but it was recommended this time to get a new one, as the current machine was deemed to be past its prime.
Council accepted the proposal from the company Industrial Machine to purchase a new Zamboni for $134,450, and trade in the old model at a value of $35,000. The total cost, therefore, for the new Zamboni is $99,450.
Funding for the Zamboni is included in the 2020 Capital Budget – Equipment Replacement Reserves.
