Highway 16 near Jasper National Park was closed on Tuesday, while police investigated a fatal multi-vehicle collision.

Hinton RCMP say at about 10:40 yesterday morning, a pickup truck traveling westbound on Highway 16 crossed the centre line into the eastbound lane and collided with an SUV about 10 kilometres east of the Park gates.

The lone occupant of the pickup truck, a 36-year-old man from British Columbia suffered minor injuries.

The SUV was carrying seven people from Edmonton. A 10-year-old girl was pronounced deceased on scene, while the six remaining occupants, aged 13, 14, 16, 19, 44, and 56-years-old, were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The name of the deceased will not be released.

The highway reopened to restricted traffic by 3:30 pm on Tuesday and police continue to investigate the crash.
