Charges have been upgraded against two Whitecourt RCMP officers in the shooting death of a 31-year old man two years ago at a rest stop near Whitecourt.
Cpl. Randy Stenger and Const. Jessica Brown were arrested on June 5th and were originally each charged with one count of criminal negligence causing death in the July 2018 shooting of Clayton Crawford.
Those charges have now been upgraded to manslaughter.
The change comes after Alberta’s Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) says the responsibility for the case was transferred to Ontario prosecutors at the request of the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service.
According to ASIRT’s initial investigation, the officers were searching for a suspect or witness to a possible shooting when they found Crawford sleeping in a vehicle at the rest stop. During a confrontation with police, the car was “put in motion” and Crawford was shot multiple times.
ASIRT says they will not be providing more details as the case is now before the courts.
