A man was taken into custody yesterday by Whitecourt RCMP after police responded to a 911 report of a male in distress in possession of a gun.

At 1:22 p.m., RCMP responded to the request for assistance on 51 Street near 54 Avenue. A male, threatening to harm himself, was outside a residence.

In the interest of public safety, nearby roadways were blocked to traffic while the RCMP made contact with the man. He was taken into police custody without issue and a loaded gun was recovered from his person.

Whitecourt RCMP say the situation unfolded very quickly and they had the man in custody within minutes of responding.

No one from the public was threatened or involved in the incident. RCMP will not be releasing more information as the investigation continues.
