The federal government has unveiled a list of items that will soon be banned in Canada under the Liberal’s single-use plastics ban.
The proposed ban on single-use plastic items was a campaign promise of the Liberals back in 2019. Now the government says regulations to introduce the ban will be finalized by the end of 2021.
The list of soon-to-be banned items that will be out of use includes plastic grocery checkout bags, straws, stir sticks, six-pack plastic rings around cans, plastic cutlery, and food takeout containers made from hard to recycle plastics.
The government says in compiling the list, they considered plastics that are harmful to the environment and hard to recycle, and whether there are readily available alternatives to those products.
The Liberal government’s long-term goal overall is to achieve zero plastic waste by the year 2030.
